Brownies (from mix)

These brownies are the cake-like variety.  Not the chewy-gooey kind.  Some people say if you lessen a Brownie recipe by 1 egg; you will achieve a gooey-like Brownie; also, reduce the cooking time by about 5 minutes.  Otherwise, if the dense, cake like brownie is what you are after – then make no alterations!

I added a cream cheese icing to the top and these brownies were gone almost instantly it seemed.  It’s a good thing we often have guests with all this baking!

Here is Grandma’s recipe card.  Take note of her legend at the bottom.  German shortforms are very similar, but mean entirely different things.  I often have to do a double take when making a German recipe, as I imagine she also had to do for quite awhile when learning English!

Brownies from Mix

  • 2 eggs
  • 3 Tablespoons water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup melted margarine
  • 2 1/2 cup Brownie Mix
  • 1/2 cup nuts (optional)
  1. Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly.
  2. Stir in the brownie mix, and blend well.  Add nuts, if desired.
  3. Bake in a greased 8×8 pan at 350 for 35 – 40 minutes.
  4. Frost with butter icing if desired.

Brownies without a pre-made Mix

  • 2 eggs
  • 3 Tablespoons water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup melted margarine
  • 1/3 cup powdered milk
  • 1 cup sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup nuts (optional)
  1. Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly (Eggs, water, vanilla & margarine).
  2. Stir in the dry ingredients, and blend well.  Add nuts, if desired.
  3. Bake in a greased 8×8 pan at 350 for 35 – 40 minutes.
  4. Frost with butter icing if desired.
